The art of mentoring:



For any organization to sustain in today’s neck to neck competition the most important thing required is to have right kind of resources employed in right and efficient manner. Out of this resources the most important one is human resource, the way its employees work becomes more and more important for the organization and has direct relationship with over all company’s output as an whole, cumulative effect of individual employee draws the picture of organization performance chart.

   Here the art of mentoring for organization becomes very important from the view point of making organization efficient in their working. Mentor is an informal word which is formal in length but otherwise not exactly the way individuals term it. For any employee selecting mentor becomes more important, mentor basically not only means a person who can impart the proper way of working in them but also goes a step beyond and helps them to overcome all the hurdles which they face in process of becoming efficient and be what they want to be. Mentor-Mentee relationship is like light house who helps vessels to locate their directions when near to shore, this also means that when vessel is in trouble and needs some kind of assistance light house always helps it to reach shore safely. Mentoring is a powerful personal development and empowerment tool. This makes this art more interesting as it revolve around individuals It is an effective way of helping people to progress in their careers and is becoming increasing popular as its potential is realized. It is a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) normally working in a similar field or sharing similar experiences. It is a helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and respect. There is no hierarchy as far as this art is concern, generally it is seen that mentor is always someone from senior position but also what should be known that people working at same level also can be mentor as both may be having same issues to be solved and thus it can make them more comfortable. Selection of mentor is more of personal decision taken by an individual, as personal issues also align somewhere or other in professional frame and mentee can seek help from mentor to get out of it and mange it in the best way he/she can. Mentor should be friend in disguise, philosopher in nature and guide in behavior, when all this three elements are mixed the real purpose is served.

   Mentor is a guide who can help the mentee to find the right direction and who can help them to develop solutions to career issues. This makes this art more important as it’s not easy to make people aware of their internal score card which is the main reason for them getting affected in adverse way, when an employee is facing some hassle with certain job specific issue its easy for his superior to educate him in depth and solve the problem but when particular mind block is not allowing him to do that job in efficient way that’s where mentor’s role gets highlighted.  Mentors rely upon having had similar experiences to gain an empathy with the mentee and an understanding of their issues. An sales manager knows that through what all sales executive has to go through and thus this can make him more acceptable by his executive and allows him to get more aware of what otherwise he would not be sharing with his immediate superior. Mentoring provides the mentee with an opportunity to think about career options and progress.

   A mentor should help the mentee to believe in own self and boost their internal confidence. A mentor should ask questions and challenge, while providing guidance and encouragement. Mentoring allows the mentee to explore new ideas with confidence.
